Having a bright white smile that you can feel confident in is possible with professional whitening treatments. Teeth whitening has evolved in recent years and is now safer and more efficient than ever. Let’s take a look at “how does teeth whitening work?” and how it could benefit you.

Why Do Teeth Become Discoloured?

teeth whitening treatment options wodenWe associate youthfulness with whiter teeth because tooth discolouration is a natural consequence of ageing. When we are born the dentin inside our teeth is bright white, but as we get older, it starts to turn yellow. This is known as intrinsic staining, and it can only be addressed through the use of professional whitening treatments.

If you smoke, drink lots of coffee, red wine or soda, your habits and choices could be taking a toll on your teeth too. These types of food and beverages cause stains to develop on the outside of your teeth. Sometimes these stains can be polished away by your dentist, but at other times they also need professional intervention in the form of teeth whitening.

How Does Teeth Whitening Work To Remove Stains And Discolouration?

In order to address intrinsic and extrinsic stains, whitening treatments need to be able to penetrate the enamel of your teeth so that the stains can be lifted from the dentine. Professional whitening treatments are very sophisticated and contain a high concentration of bleaching agent (such as hydrogen peroxide or hydrogen carbamide). They are also fortified so that they remineralise as they whiten, and so that they do not damage your teeth.

It’s important to note that over the counter and store-bought whitening treatments do not offer this level of protection. These products are too weak to penetrate your enamel and are ineffective at removing stains. Teeth whitening strips are not customised to your tooth shape and size and may not cover the entire surface of your tooth. Whitening toothpaste may contain abrasive substances that cause more damage than good.

Why You Should Avoid Home Remedies?

There is a growing trend towards natural and home remedies that endorse the use of fruit acids, charcoal and baking soda to whiten teeth, but these are not scientifically proven and may cause damage to your teeth.
